UKRAINE ‘487’
The UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) wanted to ensure the human cost of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was not overlooked by key global audiences in the UK, US, France and Germany.
With the 2024 Olympics dominating global attention, bridging the spectacle of sport with the reality of war became not only important, but urgent.
Since the start of the conflict, 487 Ukrainian athletes had lost their lives.
To bring this reality into sharp focus, a large‑scale 3D installation was created beside the UK Parliament. The structure displayed 487 in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, surrounded by black sporting equipment representing the disciplines of the fallen athletes — a powerful visual reminder of the war’s impact on Ukraine’s sporting community.
A supporting social campaign shared individual athletes’ stories, turning the number into personal narratives and extending the message to global digital audiences.
Unveiled at an event attended by the Minister for Europe, the French, German and US Ambassadors to the UK, and Ukrainian athletes past and present, the campaign generated 213 pieces of coverage across national, broadcast, consumer and regional media, reaching an estimated audience of over 1 billion.
